Hello everyone! For this week, please read the news and search for a media event or story that you can relate to our TOK style knowledge questions. We are still in the very early stages of our TOK journey, so feel free to have fun and just get your feet wet. Good luck!!

  1. Nine out of 10 people on the planet breathe polluted air, even outdoors, the World Health Organisation said.

So, to begin with, we mostly believe what we see from the news or hear from people. But what percent of the knowledge that we perceive is true?

I personally knew that there was some kind of air pollution in the world but I never thought that the rate would be this high.
If I use my sense perception to feel the pollution, I can’t. Well factories doesn’t count, I am talking about the pollution in places that we don’t even feel it. My imagination can lead me to somewhere, but how can I know whether it is true or not. I think imagination is a weak way of knowing. My knowledge was supplied by the previous news and my teachers and they only told me that world is getting more polluted every single day. Never thought it would become %92. Basically I also know that we shouldn’t trust everything we hear from other people.

Even this article could be over exaggerated, who knows, I can’t even use my reasoning here because I’m not a scientist who makes researches about this subject. I guess I should believe what WHO says because they are one of the most legit organisations in the world and there are people who took education specified about this subject.

It’s really hard to find an article about a real tok question so I picked one and put another perspective.

  2. Poor food 'risks health of half the world'

This article is about poor diets. Because of the lack of nutrients in processed food, a third of the population is expected to be obese or overweight by 2030. Nearly a quarter of the children under five don’t grow as much as they’re supposed to because of under-nourishment.
I know that under-nourishment is a problem that people are facing because I’m being told by experts and they have proof so I have a reason to believe them. Also, obesity has been in the news for many years. I know that poor people suffer more because they have to buy cheap supermarket food. The organic food can be much more expensive. I know that because I’ve seen the prices in the supermarket so I’ve used my sense perception and memory. Another problem with food is because of the growth of the population, the good food might be more expensive. Supermarkets don’t really care if people are getting the vitamins they need, they care about the profit they make. "Highly processed food with long shelf life, high in calories but low in nutritional value, maximises profit," he says. "Supermarket buyers are some of the most powerful determiners of national diet." says Prof Haddad. I can imagine what supermarkets in poorer countries like African countries sell and this makes me angry. Companies which we know that are processed (unhealthy) food such as Coca Cola and McDonalds have sponsored huge events such as the Olympics.

  3. "Want to age well - how about never retiring?"

This article introduces a healthful 97 years old man still working in an office to the reader, and also claims that retiring causes you to age badly. According to the article, working as much as possible helps you to stay fit and healthy.

As a TOK student, the first question that comes up to my mind is, to what extend we should be using language to learn something is true?

How do I know that not retiring makes you healthier? Only because I’ve seen that claim in an article, I can’t believe it, I shouldn’t believe it. By using the language, as I’ve learnt from the article, I would definitely say that people should work as much as possible to age well. But my intuition makes me think of that can’t be possible for most people. I’ve seen many people at an old age, aged badly because of not resting at their 60s, and feeling regretful. My sense perception and memory, probably shapes my intuition on the topic. In addition, my reason tells me that as you work more and more, you age in the same proportion. Thinking that these two things are directly proportional with each other is reasonable for me.
